Medicare Supplement Insurance

Insurance Blog

Having original Medicare coverage does not provide all the medical services necessary for most individuals. Many members are extremely confused as to what their coverage entails. Here are a few tips for adding a Medicare supplement insurance plan.

There are many different types of medical supplement insurance plans to choose from. The first step in seeking out additional coverage is to confirm what benefits are already held. Original Medicare coverage only includes Part A and Part B. Part A covers a portion of hospital stays that are inpatient and Part B covers limited physician care, testing, and doctor-prescribed medical equipment. Part C is a plan that makes it affordable to go to see a primary care physician or specialist. Many popular Medicare insurance plans do include both Part C and Part D coverage. There are a few plans on the market that do not contain drug coverage. Drug coverage must be held by all Medicare members, or a late enrollment penalty will be assessed to future policies for each month drug coverage was not in place through Medicare or another outside plan.

Having these first four parts of Medicare A, B, C, and D is essential to have a basic level of care that includes both inpatient, outpatient, limited vision, fitness, and drug coverage. Always carefully read through the evidence of coverage. This document will detail what is included and what the copayment is for certain services, such as primary care or specialist office visit. Drug prices will be listed by tiers and their corresponding price point. Always have a list of all medications that are taken to ensure that they are on the formulary of the insurance company as a covered drug.

Review the explanation of coverage each year that the insurance plan is kept. Benefits do change and often come as a surprise when expecting the save services as prior years on the plan. Supplemental insurance is necessary when Part C coverage does not extend any other benefits. Examples of Medicare supplement insurance include transportation to and from provider appointments, meal service, dental, gym, and vision coverage.

Always carefully review medical supplement insurance details before signing up. Each Medicare member can only have one coverage that is considered Part C or Part D. If the advertised Medicare supplement insurance plan has these features, it will automatically disenroll from the prior insurance.

If the new plan includes Part C and Part D, make sure that preferred providers are participating within the new insurance plan. Never assume what the extent of a benefit is, always carefully read the explanation of coverage. Use these tips when improving personal healthcare options with a new Medicare supplement insurance plan.

Health Insurance Haze: Clarifying The Policy Information

When I lost my job, I also lost my health insurance. I've never had to buy health insurance on my own before, so when I went to my insurance agent, I had no idea where to start. The coverage options, deductibles, co-pays, and premiums were confusing. I wasn't sure how to make sense of all of the tiers and doctor's networks. I created this site to help others who've never purchased health insurance before. The posts here are full of resources for insurance coverage, and I hope that it will help you to find the policy that's right for you.
